"... a special addition to the discography of Handel's cantatas."

Forma Antiqva's new CD "Amore X Amore" presents a selection of Handel's cantatas with a rich variety continuo instruments, including the plucked string instruments of lute, theorbo and guitar. By not relying solely on the normal 'straitjacket' continuo of combined cello and harpsichord, the results are often revelatory. For example, the delicacy of the harpsichord accompaniment to "Dolc'è pur d'amor l'affanno" (without cello) captures the intimacy of the text and of the private places where these works were first performed, and the shift to solo lute accompaniment in the da capo of the opening section gives a lovely change of color for the repetition. Throughout the CD the instrumental choices of Aarón Zapico provide a wonderful range of affect in support of the texts and of the fine voice of Xavier Sabata, making this CD a special addition to the discography of Handel's cantatas.
