Opera Zapico

The Independent (UK) | 6 December 2013

Forma Antiqva, the early-music ensemble formed by the three Zapico brothers, here offers a fascinating selection of opera music from Monteverdi to Mozart, mostly arias arranged as instrumentals, with the vocal lines most often taken by harpsichord, organ, or theorbo. It's the kind of pan-cultural exercise one associates with Jordi Savall's Hesperion XX, especially the fascinating blends of cultural indications involved in, say, applying Arabic percussion behind jangling guitars and harpsichord on Rameau's "Air Pour Les Sauvages" or realising Mozart's "Batti, Batti, O Bel Masetto" in an arrangement of guitar and pipe-organ that recalls the English folk stylings of Shirley & Dolly Collins. Elsewhere, "Se Giunge Un Dispetto" is a merry dance of recorder over warmly prancing harpsichord.
